Introducing The Pain Research Unit
The Pain Research Unit at the Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick, is a well established unit which has been investigating aspects of children's pain assessment and management for the past 17 years. During this time the Unit has become widely respected at a local, national and international level. This is well-evidenced by the fact that the Pain Research Unit hosted the 6th International Symposium of Paediatric Pain in 2003. This was the first time that this conference has been hosted in the Southern Hemisphere, attracting delegates from over 30 countries.
The Pain Research Unit aims to develop the tools and expand the knowledge base required to improve paediatric pain management practices. In response to the need for better pain assessment methods, the Pain Research Unit developed the Faces Pain Scale - Revised to facilitate reliable pain assessment in children, both in a clinical and research context.
The Pain Research Unit receives no permanent financial support from any source, but rather relies on private donations, and short-term grants from corporate, government and charitable organisations.
