Education
Maintaining effective pain management clinical practices relies on health professionals keeping abreast of the latest research and evidence-based guidelines. Members of the Pain Research Unit facilitate the integration of research and clinical practice through the provision of regular training workshops and seminars for clinical staff and students.
The Paediatric Pain Research Forum
The Paediatric Pain Research Forum is a monthly meeting for interested hospital and university staff and students to present and discuss the state of the evidence and of clinical practice in various aspects of children's pain. These meetings are well attended by research and clinical staff from a variety of disciplines. Guest presenters for 2004 include: Prof Carl von Baeyer (University of Saskatchewan, Canada), Prof JohnTaplin (University of Adelaide, Australia), Dr John Collins (Children's Hospital at Westmead, Australia), Dr Mark Lee (John Hunter Hospital, Australia), and Jo Levy (University of Sydney, Australia).
The Pain Journal Club
The Pain Journal Club is run in collaboration with the Prince of Wales Pain Management Team. This weekly lunchtime meeting reviews recently published papers on aspects of pain assessment and management.
Inservice Seminars
Regular inservice seminars are carried out for nursing staff in the South Eastern Sydney Area Health Servic by Marita McInerney and Helen Taylor on Patient-Controlled Analgesia (PCA), Nitrous Oxide analgesia, and epidural methods of pain control in children. Marita also lectures at the NSW College of Nursing in specialty courses.
Internship
The Pain Research Unit provides a crucial link for many students in the health-related sciences, who wish to pursue pain-related projects at the Sydney Children's Hospital. For many of these students, an internship with the Pain Research Unit is their first experience in the field of paediatric pain, from both a clinical and research perspective - and several students have subsequently built on this initial positive experience to select a career path in the pain field.
Current students doing research projects through the Pain Research Unit:
