Practice Development Unit
The Practice Development Unit (PDU) contributes to Sydney Children’s Hospital's major goal of improving the health outcomes of children and families. We do this by creating an environment of high challenge and high support, in which any interested staff may contribute to ongoing practice improvement.
Within the available resources, the PDU assists health professionals and others - within the Sydney Children's Hospital, SESIAHS and beyond – concerned with the health of children and their families.
The PDU provides assistance in a wide range of areas, including the following:
- Searching relevant databases to locate literature
- Appraising research articles
- Developing practice based on research findings
- Developing writing and verbal presentation skills
- Preparing quality improvement proposals
- Preparing research proposals – for ethics and funding submissions
- Developing PowerPoint presentations
- Publishing written work
- Establishing processes of culture change based on the principles of Practice Development
The major resource that the PDU offers is the expertise an enthusiasm of its staff.
Other, more mundane, resources include:
- Workroom equipped with laptop, data projector and interactive whiteboard that may be booked for clinical/quality or research meetings
- Work stations with desktop computers that may be booked for short-term or day-long use
- Laptop computers
- Data projector
- Digital camera
- Video camera
- Audio recorder
- Dictaphones
- Memory stick
- Video cassette recorder
- Library – a range of clinical, teaching and learning and research books may be borrowed
- Colour photocopying
Sydney Children's Hospital and the Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Health at the University of Technology (UTS) collaborated to establish the David Coe Professor of Child and Adolescent Nursing in 2001. Funding for this position was provided by the SCH Foundation; and a Unit was created to support the work of nurses caring for children and families throughout the Area Health Service. The work of the Unit has undergone many changes since that time, and in May 2006, the multidisciplinary Practice Development Unit (PDU) was launched.
