South Western Sydney

Introduction

The South Western Sydney, Asthma Outreach Project project commenced in February 2002. The goal of the project is to develop an evidence based coordinated approach to paediatric asthma management in Macarthur and to improve the quality of life for children with asthma.

The project incorporates several different components in the hospital and the community. Evidence based guidelines for acute asthma management have been introduced in the hospital emergency department and we are now using puffers and spacers instead of nebulisers for managing mild to moderate acute asthma. An education 'package' has been developed and is given to the families of children who are admitted to hospital with asthma. A key component of the project is outreach asthma education delivered to families in their homes after their child is discharged from hospital.

A partnership between the Macarthur Health Service (Campbelltown Hospital) and the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick has been established and both sites have received GESCHN funding to employ a part-time CNC. Ivonne Buckley has been employed in this position in Macarthur from the beginning of October. She is beginning to evaluate the first 6 months of the project.
