Caring for Carers
Twenty parents and carers from Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick were treated to a cruise and seafood smorgasbord on Sydney Harbour this week to celebrate Carer's Week (21-27 October 2002).
The Cruise was an opportunity for the group of parents and carers to have some 'time-out', to get together and talk with one another for a couple of relaxing hours.
Arrangements were made by the Brain Injury Rehabilitation team at the Hospital for their children to be looked after for the day.
Many parents and carers have a 24-hour job looking after their disabled or seriously ill child, partner, friend or family member. No one really plans to be a carer and the role can be emotionally, physically and financially stressful.
Australia is home to over 2.3 million carers and approximately 800,000 of them live in NSW.
The Cruise sponsored by Carers NSW and hosted by Majistic Cruises was a real success and plans are already under way for next year.
