New building for SCH
*Building works commence Wednesday, 5 October 2011*Sydney Children's Hospital is undergoing a number of changes, with one of the most highly anticipated being the development of a new hospital wing.

With more than 36,000 children presenting to the Emergency Department and more than 15,000 children admitted to the Hospital each year; the new wing will provide staff with the space needed to care for current and future generations of children.
When complete, the new five storey building will house:
- An eight bed Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit;
- A comprehensive Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre (partly funded by the Motor Accidents Authority of NSW);
- A surgical 23 hour inpatient ward;
- A new Family Centre for parents and carers, sponsored by Ronald McDonald House Charities;
- The Child Protection Unit, and;
- New clinical office space for health care professionals from a range of disciplines.
Traffic changes - while we build a bigger hospital for your kids
Following a government tender process, a building contractor, Broad Construction Services (NSW/VIC) Pty Ltd were recently appointed with building works commencing on Wednesday, 5 October 2011.
The new wing will take approximately 18 months to complete and will be located on the site of the Hospital's external disabled parking lot, on Hospital Road.
During the construction period, the below traffic changes will be in place.
All traffic changes will be clearly signed and are essential to the safe construction of the new wing.
Part of Hospital Road will convert to a one-way street
Hospital Road is adjacent to the Hospital's High Street front entrance. During the construction period, this street will be converted to a one-way street, from High Street to Delivery Drive;
Relocation of accessible car spaces
The five accessible car spaces currently on the site of the new building will be relocated to five clearly signed car spaces only metres away, on Hospital Road - outside the Fairy Garden, and;Reversed direction under 'the wave' - patient drop off zone
Cars entering the driveway in front of the Hospital's High street main entrance (under 'the wave') will now need to follow temporary signs, directing all drivers to enter the driveway from the Hospital Road entrance, NOT the High street entrance.
Please refer to the traffic plan for further details.
The Hospital team together with the appointed contractor will make every effort to keep the local community informed of the new wing's development, and ensure that any disruption is appropriately managed.
Background to the Clinical Services Building
Over time, it was identified that several hospital services required additional physical space in order to continue treating future generations of children. In May 2010, the then Deputy Premier and Minister for Health, the Hon Carmel Tebbutt MP announced that the NSW Government had committed to supporting the project, in partnership with the SCH Foundation.
The media release announcing the State Government's commitment to the new building can be viewed here.
Sydney Children's Hospital Foundation - $15 million commitment
The Hospital Foundation has committed to raising $15 million for the new hospital wing and will soon embark on a major public appeal.
